Day 6: Rescued From Self-Focused Anxiety

Questions 1 and 2

We have received a legal document of rescue and freedom from our Father:
“I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.” 18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.” Hebrews 10:17-18
“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 5:1
By the Son of God’s death and rising from the dead three days later, our hearts were cut through and filled with words of freedom, breathed by the Holy Spirit into our souls. Words that pronounce forgiveness for our sin, ‘not guilty’ for our punishment, reconciliation rather than wrath, perfect righteousness instead of rags of self-effort, and eternal life held in the arms of God.
Our chains of bondage to anxiety crash to the floor because Jesus held out His hands and feet to be shackled in our place. There is light streaming through the open door of our former prison cell because Jesus Christ stepped forward and took on all our self-doubt, fear, distress, and darkness on the wooden beams of the cross.
Fear says, "Alas, I am…" It wants us to think, "I cannot face this challenge. I must protect myself." But Jesus invites us to look to Him for rescue when fear and anxiety surface. We are invited to recall that the gospel is the power of God for salvation (Romans 1:16) and look to where it was accomplished, and there we will hear the courage giving good news that drenches our hearts in peace. Jesus' sacrifice of love for us is enough, and it always will be.
Through His blood of purchase and protection, we are delivered and brought close to God since Jesus was cut off ‘from the land of the living’:
"But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ." Ephesians 2:13 NLT
Now, “be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6
Applying the Gospel
When fears assail us, God’s truth gives us a steady anchor to step away from our struggles and to pray for His amazing grace “in every situation” (Philippians 4:6-7). As we read scripture passages, God’s words can be powerfully included in our prayers of adoration, confession, thanksgiving, need, and humble requests for the leading of the Holy Spirit. The unshakable words of God will change our hearts as we speak them in faith:
“The same thing is true of the words I speak. They will not return to me empty. They make the things happen that I want to happen, and they succeed in doing what I send them to do. Isaiah 55:11 NCV
Heavenly Father, please open our eyes and hearts to see the glory and love of Jesus Christ in the words we read in the Bible. Our faltering words cannot adequately express our utter gratefulness for Jesus taking our place on the cross for forsaking You for other idols and gods (Jeremiah 1:15). We confess that we have been holding onto anxiety, not trusting You or Your Sovereign care over every moment of our lives. Thank You for the truth and comfort that You knew us before we were formed in the womb (Jeremiah 1:5), and now as New Covenant believers, we are forever in Your glorious presence (Jeremiah 1:19). We have been rescued (Jeremiah 1:8), set apart (Jeremiah 1:8), set free (Romans 6:14), and made righteous (2 Corinthians 5:21). We know that in our weakness, You are a fortified city, an iron pillar and a bronze wall for us in strength (Jeremiah 1:18) against the things that threaten to overwhelm us in worry. When we are tempted like Jeremiah to say in fear that we are “too…” (Jeremiah 1:7), remind us of Your sufficiency, put Your words in our mouths to sustain us (Jeremiah 1:9). Please give us the grace to see ourselves in Christ as You see us, to savor Your truth, and adore You. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen
