We find our word translated with two words:
Temperance: KJV; YLT; WEB
Self-control: NKJV; NLT; NIV; ESV; CSB; NASB; NET; RSV; AMP
"temperance" is now limited to one form of "self-control" of staying away from alcohol or referring mainly to abstinence from intoxicating drinks. That is not the idea of this word - abstaining from alcohol.
"self-control" is commonly defined as the virtue of one who masters his desires and passions, esp. his sensual appetites; the ability to control oneself, particularly one's emotions and desires, especially in difficult situations. The ability to regulate one's feelings, thoughts, and behavior in the face of temptations and impulses. Synonyms: self-discipline, self-restraint, self-mastery, will power.
Wait a minute: It has been the Holy Spirit who has been working in our lives to bring forth love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness – Now it's my turn to control myself? – Is this the idea of "self-control" here in Galatians 5:23?
Am I responsible for this ninth part of the fruit (11.11%)? Is "self-control" merely my self-discipline, my self-restraint, my self-mastery, my willpower.? That doesn't sound right.
Let's look at this Greek word more closely.
ἐγκράτεια enkráteia, eng-krat'-i-ah; (G1468) is a compound word:
from 1722/en, "in the sphere of"
and 2904/krátos, "dominion, mastery, power")
This sphere of dominion, strength, or power is from within. - This "self-control" is proceeding out from within oneself, BUT not by the power and will of oneself.
The sense here of enkráteia is that the Holy Spirit's influence on the heart makes a person moderate in all indulgences. The Holy Spirit teaches them to restrain their passions, govern themselves, control their evil propensities, and subdue all inordinate affection because they walk in the Spirit and not fulfill the flesh's lust.
So, the proper use of this Greek word stresses the controlling power of the will is under the operation of the Spirit of God; Jesus expressed this in His prayer:
"saying, "Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done." (Luke 22:42 NKJV)
1. How have you thought of “self-control” in the past? How does the fact that the Holy Spirit will be helping hope in this area of your life?
