Lesson 10 – Self-control

Question 9

Application: Jesus' self-control at the Cross
Jesus was always submitting to the Father. The Cross was always on Jesus' heart and mind. Jesus knew that He would be that final sacrifice for sin. Jesus was submitted to the Father's will.
"Then Jesus answered and said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner." (John 5:19 NKJV)
"For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. (39) "This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing but should raise it up at the last day. (40) "And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day." (John 6:38-40 NKJV)
Jesus was preaching the Gospel (His death, burial, and resurrection) throughout His ministry.
"Jesus answered them and said, "My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me." (John 7:16 NKJV)
"Then Jesus said to them, "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things." (John 8:28 NKJV) (again, a reference to the Cross)
"For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak." (John 12:49 NKJV)
"Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works." (John 14:10 NKJV)
