What is Peace?
Definition from the Greek word:
εἰρήνη eirḗnē, i-ray'-nay; peace (literally or figuratively); a quietness, rest, a state of tranquility, freedom from the rage and havoc of war, peace between individuals and within a community, i.e., harmony, safety, happiness
Considering our peace with God: it is the tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ. We fear nothing from God and are content with our earthly lot, as well as after death.
Few examples of how the word "peace" is used:
There are 4 uses of peace between others.
1. The peaceful relationship between God and the Christian, accomplished through the Gospel – Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection.
Jesus was preparing the disciples for His death and reassured them that in Him, there is peace:
“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (John 14:27 NKJV)
"These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." (John 16:33 NKJV)
Paul reminds us that we are at peace with God by faith through our Lord Jesus Christ because Christ died for us.
“Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ... (6) For when we were still without strength, in due time, Christ died for the ungodly.” (Romans 5:1, 6 NKJV)
“But now in Christ Jesus, you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. (14) For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, [speaking of the separation between Jews and Gentiles] (15) having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, (16) and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the Cross, thereby putting to death the enmity. (17) And He came and preached peace to you who were afar off and to those who were near. (18) For through Him, we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.” (Ephesians 2:13-18 NKJV)
Notice how Paul views the peace we have because of the Gospel. Jesus has brought us near, by the blood to the Father; Jesus is our peace. Jesus has reconciled us to God the Father through the Cross
“and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7 NKJV)
When we consider this "peace of God," it surpassed all human understanding that the world cannot comprehend.
“and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His Cross.” (Colossians 1:20 NKJV)
It is through a bloody Cross we are reconciled to God. It is through a bloody Cross that we will find peace.
