Day 17. Our Identity in Christ
Question 1
To know your real identity as a Christian is to live in freedom from habitual sin. This is because “who we believe ourselves to be” determines “what we do.” This week and next, we are going to focus on our identity and discover the power it has in our lives.
“I was taught by the world that I was an ‘addict in recovery’, and had embraced that identity for many years. It took coming to really understand with my heart the gospel of Jesus Christ to set me free from worldly labels.” Christine
One of the devil’s most powerful tactics for keeping people enslaved is to convince us to find our identity in our temptations and the desires of our flesh. Once we begin to see our identity in that way, we can be enslaved to sin for life. After all, we think, “It’s just who I am! Once an addict, always an addict!”
Many groups teach people to say things like this: “Hello, my name is Mike, and I’m an alcoholic”, or “I identify as a _______ (fill in the blank)”. But the problem with doing this is that it forces us to identify with a particular temptation, plaguing thought, or sinful behavior.
Question 1. Have you associated your identity with a particular sin struggle in the past? Please share your thoughts.

For the next few lessons, we will see that the world’s method of trapping us in identities related to our struggle and sin is simply Satan’s way of keeping us enslaved, whereas the truth of God’s Word regarding our identity in Christ will set us free.
“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free!”
