Day 17. Our Identity in Christ
Question 2 and 3
God's Empowering Grace
Let’s begin with a study of Romans 6 in the Bible.
What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
Romans 6:1-4 (NIV)
Paul had previously told the Romans that “where sin increased grace increased all the more” (Romans 5:20). It is common for people to end up with the wrong view of grace, believing that they can just keep sinning, keep falling, and keep gratifying their flesh because grace covers it all. This is a misunderstanding of what grace does. True gospel grace teaches us to live differently and empowers us to change:
“For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age…”
Titus 2:11-12 (NIV)
Question 2. According to Titus 2:11–12, what does God’s grace do for the believer?
Question 3. In Romans 6:2, what argument does Paul use to correct this misunderstanding of grace?
And right here we see our true identity: we are dead to sin. Say it to yourself right now: “I am dead to sin!” That is the identity of the believer in Jesus because, in God’s eyes, we died with Christ (Galatians 2:20).
We will study this more in-depth in the next lesson.
