Day 18. Our Identity in Christ

Question 2

Paul, the writer of Romans, goes on to teach this truth of the believer’s death with Christ by using the illustration of baptism:
“Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”
Romans 6:3–4

Question 2. According to Romans 6:3–4, please list all the things that have happened to you as a believer.

In God’s eyes, everyone who believes in Jesus has already undergone the penalty for their sin through Jesus’ death on the cross. That means that the people we were before Christ, the sins we lived in, and the shame we embraced were all taken off of us, and we no longer own them.

It's like being drafted into a new sports team. When you're drafted, you leave your old team behind and are now part of something new. You put on your new team's jersey, bonding you to them.
In the same way, when we believe and are baptized into Christ, we leave our old lives behind. We become united and bonded to Jesus in His death and resurrection. We are drafted into God's team; we now wear "Christ's jersey," identifying us with Him.
Just as a draft pick starts a new life with their new team, we begin a new life in Christ when we are baptized into union with Him. Our past no longer defines us; we're now part of Christ's team, covered by His victory over sin and death.
Since we have “joined the new team”, we have a new identity, a new power, and a new Master, so we cannot accept the same old labels the world places on us; we are not “addicts in recovery” any longer; we are children of God, overcomers in Christ.
