Romans chapter 6 begins by teaching us that all believers died with Jesus Christ on the cross. That is Paul’s argument as to why we cannot keep on sinning as a habit pattern. “We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?” (Romans 6:2 NIV)
As believers in Jesus, we can say this same statement that Paul did:
“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me!”
Galatians 2:20
What exactly does this mean?
In God’s eyes, the old you, the sinful you, died on the cross with Jesus Christ two thousand years ago. In God’s eyes, you have already paid for your sin in the Person who died for you.
This means that your complete identity outside of Christ, any labels that you have had in the past, your sinful nature and complete past life have all died! That sinful self is who you were in Adam, not who you are in Christ.
Do you remember the sign placed above the head of Jesus when He died on the cross? “Above his head, they placed the written charge against him: this is Jesus, the king of the Jews” (Matthew 27:37). It was common to nail a sign, which stated the charges, above the head of the dying criminal. God prevented any real charges from being nailed above the head of Jesus, as He was simply not guilty of any charges, and indeed God declared Him guilty of all charges of all humans, which were too numerous to write on a sign above His head.
But since you died with Jesus, according to the Scriptures, you need to see that sign written with any label you have taken to yourself apart from Christ. In my case, the sign would say, “This is Mike Cleveland, drunkard, drug abuser, smoker, liar, impure, glutton, deceiver, etc.”
Question 5. What does that sign above your head say concerning you as you are crucified with Jesus?

Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
