Lesson 31:The Gospel Enables Us to Run the Christian Race Well
Question 1
Marco Polo of Mike’s teaching: Monday 9th August 2021
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.”
Hebrews 12:1 NLT
“We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.”
Hebrews 12:2 NLT
“You were running the race so well. Who has held you back from following the truth?”
Galatians 5:7 NLT
“[In Galatians 5:7, we learn] first of all, Paul says they were running the race so well. Behold the power of the cross. They were running so well when someone sees Jesus as the Lamb of God taking away their sin. As you see Jesus as your scapegoat, bearing your sins off into the wilderness, as you see Jesus as your substitute taking the wrath of God in your place, suffering instead of you, paying your penalty, breaking sin’s power at the cross. When you see all that you want to RUN. This is what enables us to run and not grow weary. It enables us to run in the path of God’s commands, happily obeying Him out of a full heart….
Point number two and this is what is shocking and awesome. When you turn to the law you become disobedient. What! …Paul says: “You were running the race so well. Who has held you back from following the truth?” When you were looking at the cross you were running so well. When you turned to the law you became disobedient to the gospel, disobedient to the faith, disobedient to God’s revealed plan and will for you. How ironic is that! To turn to the law is to disobey the truth.”
Question 1: According to Galatians 5:7, how do you run the Christian life well? How do you become disobedient to God, disobedient to the truth?
