Lesson 14 The Wedding and the Wine - the Body and the Blood
Questions 3, 4 and 5
Jesus was always focused on His primary mission - the work of redemption that He would do on the cross. We know this because throughout His ministry He repeatedly references His upcoming death (Matthew 16:21, Matthew 20:18-19, Matthew 26:1-2).
“Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim. 8 Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." John 2:6-8 (NIV)
Question 3: What was the original use of the water jars?
Question 4: How much water did they put into the "empty" jars?
The stone jars were used by the Jews as part of their purification ceremonies under the Old Testament law (Leviticus 15:11, Numbers 8:7). Jesus intentionally chose those jars and instructed the servants to fill them "to the brim" with water. Jesus then transformed the water into wine and sent the servants with the new wine to the "master of the banquet."
"and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, "Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink, but you have saved the best till now." 11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him." John 2:9-11 (NIV)
Remember, this was the first sign of His Messiahship that the disciples witnessed.
Question 5: What were the results of Jesus "revealing His glory"?
