Lesson 17 The Cross Makes Us New Creations

Questions 1 and 2

Dear friend, welcome back! What a blessing it is to look to Jesus together with you.
We know that the gospel, Jesus’ death for the forgiveness of sins, His burial, and His rising from the dead on the third day is of first importance as outlined in (1 Corinthians 15:3-4), the reason this course exists. We also know the gospel was God’s plan before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4). Because of this, we should be able to see the gospel from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21. So let’s begin our study today beginning with Genesis chapter 1.
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.” Genesis 1:1-5 (ESV)
“The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” Genesis 1:2 (ESV)

Our lives were just like the earth, in fact, we could say, “In the beginning” our lives were without form and in an uninhabitable state, void and buried in the darkness of the deep. The word translated as “deep” here means a “great abyss” or deepest darkest waters. But thankfully, God’s plan prior to the foundation of the world was to save the world by sending His Son, not to condemn the world but that the world might be saved through Him (John 3:17).
“And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light” Genesis 1:3 (ESV)

Question 2: How does Genesis 1:3 point us to the cross of Christ, The Light of the world who would take away our sin?
