Yes, when God said, “let there be light” everything changed and the uninhabitable became habitable, took on form, was no longer void or empty and darkness was separated from the light. And this light that God saw as “good” became Good News to us! “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone” (Isaiah 9:2).
“And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness.” Genesis 1:4 (ESV)
Before Christ rescued us out of the darkness we walked in the darkness. Some for many years which made our lives seem worthless, formless, powerless, and void of anything good. But at the cross, God lifted us out of this darkness, by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, to be a sin offering for us (Romans 8:3).
“for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light” Ephesians 5:8 (ESV)
“For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh,” Romans 8:3 (ESV)
At the cross, we are crucified with Christ, and raised with Christ in His resurrection. And by His Spirit living with us Christ is formed in us, “my little children, for whom I am again in the anguish of childbirth until Christ is formed in you!” (Galatians 4:19). Those who believe this message of power and love no longer are void, but instead are filled with Christ, having Christ formed in them and in this powerful cross where Jesus died we see “light shining out of darkness.”
When we preach or teach Jesus Christ and him crucified, we call our listeners attention to the cross where they will see, Jesus, who carried their sorrows, was stricken, smitten by God, afflicted, left for dead, separated from His Father, hanging on the cross without form, void and empty of human or heavenly help. This is the place where His blood poured out like water, nailed to the tree to die in the darkness of death (Psalm 22:14). Then Jesus went even deeper into the darkness, the grave, and into “the heart of the earth” (Matthew 12:40). He lay there for three days, so He could go down to the depths of death for us and raise us up from the dead with Him.
Question 4: Are you beginning to see, or have you seen the gospel emerging from Genesis 1?
“God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.” Genesis 1:5 (ESV)
Question 5: On what day did all that we’ve studied so far take place?
