Lesson 3 Resting In Christ

Question 1

Welcome back to the course! Today we’ll look at the burial of Jesus Christ. It is critical that we preach and teach with the one message Jesus told us to “Go and make disciples of all nations” with. The message that keeps us grounded and free from becoming distorted with "another gospel." The one message that keeps our lives stable, at peace, filled with joy, and changes our very nature (our hearts) on the inside. The message of the cross has the power to alter creation by making us new creations!
To begin today’s study, notice how God made the life and experiences of the Old Testament prophet, Jonah, to be a signpost pointing forward to the gospel of Jesus Christ:
“For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” Matthew 12:40 ESV
After Jesus’ suffering on the cross for our sins He would ”rest” from His work for ”three days and three nights” in the heart of the earth. If the cross was where the battle was won, ”...having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross” (Colossians 2:15), then the grave is where Jesus found rest from His work.
”Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it. 2 For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened.“ Hebrews 4:1-2 ESV

Question 1: Hebrews 4 states that “good news” came but the message they heard “did not benefit them” and kept them from entering “his rest.” Just what was it that kept them from entering this rest?
