Lesson 17. The Gospel: the Message that Addicts Us to Ministry

Day 1

We have come now to the end of the Book of 1 Corinthians—chapter 16 is the last chapter. In it, Paul provides practical instructions and closing thoughts, all the while demonstrating the gospel of Jesus Christ. Let’s read the first section:
Now about the collection for the Lord's people: Do what I told the Galatian churches to do. On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made. Then, when I arrive, I will give letters of introduction to the men you approve and send them with your gift to Jerusalem. If it seems advisable for me to go also, they will accompany me
1 Corinthians 16:1-4 NIV

Question 1. Why was Paul instructing the Corinthians to set aside money?

Paul instructed the Corinthians to set aside funds on the first day of the week, which was probably when the church met. In this way, the funds would be readily available to send to the needy church in Jerusalem.
In light of the cross of Christ and considering how Jesus gave His body and blood for us who were in need of righteousness, Paul invited the church to display the love of God by providing for the financial needs of the churches in Jerusalem.
We might picture the "gift" Paul was sending to Jerusalem as representing the gift of God’s Son that God gave to the world; both supplied what was lacking, both were given to needy people, both were given out of a heart full of love.

Question 2. How do you see the gospel of Jesus Christ as driving Paul’s desire to supply the Jerusalem church with what they needed?

Finally, note the unity of the church worldwide. Paul told the Corinthians to do what he had instructed the Galatian church to do. Each church should not only consider its own interests but also look to see how they can help other churches. Additionally, each individual member of the church was invited to participate. Each of us who have received from Jesus has something to give. Therefore, we are encouraged to look to see what the needs of others are and give from the overflow of a heart that has received so much through Jesus!

Question 3. How does considering Christ’s death and resurrection to save and sanctify you enable you to see the needs of others and give to them? Please share.
