Lesson 13: Your New Identity Hidden in Christ

Questions 2 and 3

We shared what the outcome of having our hearts set on earthly things has been or what we wanted and what our flesh desired. Attempting to fix everything on our own and in our own power we are reminded of all the pain and misery that followed. Having both of our hearts and minds working together against us in utter selfishness is a deadly combination for any marriage. But when working together as one, setting our hearts and minds on things above, staying focused on the cross brings life, contentment, wholeness, and real joy.
“For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.” Colossians 3:3

Friend, to have our hearts and minds set on things above requires the death of our old nature. The death of our old identity with sin is forever buried in the grave and our new identity in Christ is resurrected, seated with Christ as a new creation, an identity forever hidden in Christ. When we become new creatures in Christ the old self is crucified and the new has come. We are given new desires and consumed with Godly love from Christ's selfless sacrifice.
Before we died and were raised with Christ our marriage was empty and hollow as well as cold and lonely. When we came to the cross we were dead in sin but made alive in Christ and were raised up with Him in power. Our attitudes, words and desires changed, as the bible says, “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit” (2 Corinthians 3:18). The love of Christ and the blood that flowed from His wounds began healing our marriage. Our attitudes and wounded hearts were carried to the cross and put to death and we began experiencing healing, wholeness, selflessness and unity through gospel power.
“He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed.”  1 Peter 2:24 NLT
