Lesson 14: Storing up Treasures
Question 4
“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich” 2 Corinthians 8:9
Dear friend, though Jesus was rich He ‘became poor’ for you and I. He left His family and heavenly home for a place on earth where He had no place to lay His head (Luke 9:58). Can you imagine the Son of God becoming poor this way? To rescue us as He was stripped of all the things in which He created and owned? His own did not even recognize Him (John 1:11). Jesus was stripped of His robe and royalty so that through His poverty and death on the cross you and I might become rich! Rich in God’s forgiveness so that we might be able to forgive others. Rich in mercy that we might be able to be merciful to others. Rich in grace that we might be able to give grace to others. Friend, look to the cross and see the love of God, the riches of His grace, and the mercy poured out so that those who are poor in spirit might inherit the Kingdom of God (Matthew 5:3).
Question 4. What are your thoughts about putting your hope in God who has provided everything for our enjoyment and to make us rich through Jesus’ poverty? Please share.

While on the cross Jesus was ‘storing up treasure’ in heaven and ‘purchasing a place’ for us when He was bleeding out His life paying for our sin (John 14:3). And when He rose alive on the third day to justify all who believe, He went to prepare a permanent place in heaven for us. Dear friends, we can store up treasure in heaven by sharing the gospel message that saved us, forgave us all of our sin, cleansed us from all unrighteousness, washed us from all uncleanliness, which made us white as snow and sanctified us for the day Jesus returns for us.
“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs” (1 Timothy 6:10). It’s not that money is bad, but the heart and greed behind the motives. Many view this passage as money being the root of all kinds of evil, but it is the ‘love of money' that is the root of ‘all kinds of evil.’
In our next lesson we will continue our study regarding finances, showing practical ways on how to work together as one.
