Lesson 9: Marriage - The Wordless Gospel

Questions 1, 2 and 3

Hello Friends, welcome back. We hope and pray that your marriage is continuing to grow and blossom as you study with us. Today we will be looking at 1 Peter as this is a wonderful Scripture that shows how we can live out the wordless gospel before our spouses in a way that is not often seen. Look with us in this gospel example; how it reveals Christ’s submission to His Father in everything and how powerful it is to live out the gospel in our marriages and daily lives.
“To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you. Leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. 22 He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth. When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. 25 For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.”
1 Peter 2:21-25
Look now with us at the connection of what Jesus has done on the cross and how wives can follow Christ in the same way. Notice the phrase “in the same way.”
“Wives, in the same way, submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives 2 when they see the purity and reverence of your lives.”
1 Peter 3:1-2
What does it mean that “in the same way” wives are to be submissive to their husbands? As stated earlier we must look to the cross for clarity and a proper interpretation of what these passages mean, as we do not align our thinking with the world's opinions but through the gospel’s power. With the background of 1 Peter chapter 2 and 3 and the sufferings of Jesus, notice the power of a gospel-centered wife to her husband. A wife that is focused on the cross herself, on the sufferings of Jesus, and who puts her hope in God.

Erick wrote; "I’m so thankful that Sylvia lived out this passage without even knowing it. She was the only example of Christ I would see in my life and it was having a profound impact on me, though neither one of us knew it at the time. In doing so, this passage spoke to me very powerfully, just as it says. I was unbelieving, living in sin, raging with anger, and yet my wife would faithfully go to church without a word. Sylvia was an example to me of what it means to live out the gospel without words but through her actions. And how beauty comes from within, from the heart, rather than outward adornment. She would get ready for church every Sunday and look absolutely beautiful and radiant. On her way to church she never said anything but an occasional, ‘would you like to go?’ And just as this passage says, I was being won over as I was seeing Christ in her, loving me without words but by her good behavior."
