Lesson 9: Marriage - The Wordless Gospel

Questions 4 and 5

Dear friends, we are called to follow in the footsteps of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To follow in His suffering, knowing that “those who marry will face many troubles in this life” (1 Corinthians 7:28). Insults will be hurled, threats will be made, but we likewise must entrust ourselves to Jesus who took them all for us when He suffered on the cross. Jesus always entrusted Himself to ‘God who judges justly.’ Jesus bore our sins and pain while shedding His blood that we might die to sin, live for righteousness and be healed from all of our wounds through His wounds.
This is the most beautiful wordless gospel that we wives have the privilege of emulating from Jesus Himself, where our husbands would 'see' the love of Christ and the power of Christ in His death and resurrection, not through our words but in our purity, reverence and respect for Him. When you love your spouse as Christ loves the church your heart's desire is to emulate Christ's love and submission as a natural heartfelt passion. Maybe you were like me at one time who thought that being submissive was for the weak, the fearful and the powerless. But look with me as Christ showed submission to the Father while on the cross, doesn’t this show us how beautiful and powerful it is for us wives to love and desire to submit by sharing the gospel with our husbands and not just sometimes but always?

Sylvia wrote; "We should be most attractive by our inner unfading beauty for our spouse which is of greater worth in God’s sight. Some may ask, what does this mean and how do I do that? In my 34 years of marriage, as my relationship and love for Jesus Christ has grown, my relationship and love for my husband has grown as well. But only made possible by dying to self leaving all my selfish ways at the cross to be raised with Christ and made new. Without the atonement of Jesus Christ, my life would have had no value, no forgiveness, no change, no healing and no renewal. The cross of Christ forgives me, cleanses me and gives me new desires every day, it has also transformed my life and continues to, day by day. Through Jesus Christ I can now experience unconditional love, beautiful forgiveness and I can love my husband like never before as I serve him with joy because I want to and choose to. You see how it’s not wrong to be beautiful on the outward but how the inner unfading beauty is of greater worth in God’s sight? So, Yes I can say that the inner unfading beauty is a far greater worth to a believing or an unbelieving spouse."
