Lesson 18: Sticks And Stones
Questions 1
Dear friends, as always it is a joy and privilege to have our own hearts encouraged by the gospel of Jesus Christ, and then to share our marriage and life with you is an added joy and pleasure for us.
“Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.”
Do you remember this silly yet hurtful little saying? We all learned that this ‘harmless’ saying isn’t so harmless after all. In fact, there may be words that have stuck with many of us our entire lives, while our broken bones may have been completely healed and forgotten about. Words wound much deeper and take far longer to heal than any sticks or any stones that could ever break our bones. And as James says the tongue is full of deadly poison, “…no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison”. James 3:8 NIV
Question 1. Is there a word or words that have cut deep that you would like to share with us?

Erick wrote; "Though I didn’t break any of her bones, my words went deep and left wounds deeper than I could have ever known. Words that cannot be taken back, that shot out like arrows with poisoned tips. Words that spear the spirit of their intended target. I can never take back my reckless words that pierced my wife’s heart like a sword, as Proverbs says, 'The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.' Proverbs 12:18 NIV I came to her in my anger and rage (with sticks and stones) but by the grace of God brought healing and restoration."
I just praise the Lord that Sylvia received healing from every wound that poured out of my hard heart and evil mouth (and you can too). And me? I received a pardon of compassion far beyond comprehension and freedom from further accusation as Colosssians says, “But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation” (Colossians 1:22).
On the cross, Jesus would take the pain of all the innocent, as well as all the punishment from every evil sinful act—crushing it all to death in His body.
