Lesson 18: Sticks And Stones

Question 2

Through His death and by the blood and water that poured out of His side, He would heal Sylvia, pardon me, rekindle, redeem, and restore the love and the years that had been lost.
“and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross” (Colossians 1:20).
Like the stick that struck the stone in (Exodus 17:6) that quenched the Isralites who were thirsty, so Jesus was struck while hanging on the cross to quench our spiritual thirst as 1 Corinthians says,“They all ate the same spiritual food 4 and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.” 1 Corinthians 10:3-4
So with a wooden stick (the cross) and a rolled away stone (the empty tomb) the Lamb of God would not only quench our thirst but, “heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons” (Matthew 10:8).
On the cross Jesus would exchange His place in heaven among the living, for a place on Calvary’s hill to rescue the dead. Then rising from the grave on the third day we would have a living hope through Jesus’ life living in you. Even though the cross represents what I deserved for all my sin and foolishness, it more clearly represents the love of God for hopeless sinners, the freedom, healing, forgiveness and new life purchased for us.
Jesus took the stripes to His back and the rod to His head (Matthew 27:30). Jesus took the nails to His hands and feet (Psalm 22:16), bearing the pain, suffering for our sin, and wearing as a crown the curse, a crown of thorns. He was handed over to evil men who pierced and killed the innocent, holy and righteous One. They hanged Jesus on a tree to pardon the guilty and set them free, so those hurting could be healed and the outcasts could be received (Jeremiah 30:17).

Question 2. How does the cross bring healing to your wounds from words that seemed too deep to be healed? Please share.
