Jesus said that He could give her living water. You may be wondering what living water is. I mean we know what drinking water is, we know river water, spring water and water from a lake is, but what is this “living water”? And what does it have to do with media addiction? Well, let’s continue studying and we’ll begin to see the answer to these things, and much more!
This story gives us a little insight into the person of Jesus Christ. Even though Jesus, as a man, was thirsty, He is also God (John 1:1, 14), and He has “Living Water” that He can give to any person who wants it. As a man Jesus was physically thirsty; as God, He has living water for all! As we continue in this story we’ll see what this living water is.
John 4:11-12 NIV "Sir," the woman said, "you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? (12) Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?"
The woman Jesus is talking with doesn’t understand what living water is, so she asks where Jesus can get it, and if He is greater than Jacob, her ancestor who dug the well where they were talking. Now, watch what comes next, it is amazing:
John 4:13-14 NIV Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, (14) but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life."
Question 2. What did Jesus say would be the condition of people who drank from the “this water” (the water in the well)?

Jesus makes a very obvious statement: whoever drinks this water (referring to the water in the well) will be thirsty again. It is true; if we drink water, our physical thirst is quenched for a while, but then we get thirsty again and have to drink more water. That’s obvious.
But what we are going to begin seeing from this story is that Jesus was using the water in the well as a metaphor (a deep comparison) for what the woman was doing in her life. Let’s keep reading:
John 4:15 NIV The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water."
Jesus said He had living water that would quench this woman’s thirst forever, so she asked him for it. But in order for Him to give her this thirst-quenching water, there was a subject that He needed to bring up first.
John 4:16-18 NIV He told her, "Go, call your husband and come back." (17) "I have no husband," she replied. Jesus said to her, "You are right when you say you have no husband. (18) The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true."
Question 3. How many men had this woman been with, and what do you think this has to do with this discussion about water and being “thirsty again”? What are your thoughts?
