Lesson 5 The Gift of Living Water Satisfies Us Forever

Question 4

Picture yourself thirsting for a moment. You go to a drinking fountain and drink and it feels good, but shortly thereafter you are thirsty again so you go back and take another long drink. But you’re still thirsty, so you drink again, and again. Something is not working, the water is not quenching your thirst like you thought it would.
Now picture yourself going to another drinking fountain and drinking. Wow, there’s something different about this one, the water is cool, refreshing, and you find that it does quench your thirst. This water makes you feel satisfied.
The first fountain didn’t satisfy and only created a greater need, but the second fountain was sweet, refreshing and satisfying.
And this is the difference between media addiction and what Jesus is offering. The temporary enjoyment of gaming, social media, etc. vs. the true and eternal satisfaction that Jesus offers.
For the remainder of our time together today, I want us to notice three things from the story we are considering in John chapter 4. Let’s look at it again:
John 4:10-11;13-14 NIV  Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water."  (11)   (13)  Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,  (14)  but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life."
  • The water Jesus gives is a gift, not something you earn.
Sometimes people think they have to be good enough to earn their reward from Jesus. No, Jesus said it was “the gift of God”.

Question 4. According to Jesus in John 4:10, what would the woman need to do to get the living water?
