Lesson 15 Essential Connection to the Gospel
Question 3
It is clear from the Bible that Christ and the gospel are to be received by faith (Romans 3:25). That is, we are to believe the good news and receive Jesus by faith.
It is also evident that faith justifies us before God and gives us access to God (Romans 5:1-2). In other words, when we believe the gospel we are made right with God and can come into His presence.
Romans 10:17 teaches us how we get faith. It’s not something we come up with on our own, rather we get faith by hearing the gospel message. “Faith comes by hearing…”. This is why all our courses at Setting Captives Free are filled with the gospel so that people might hear it, come to believe it, and thereby receive all the blessings of it (Galatians 3:8-9).
Then Galatians 3:23 tells us something interesting: it says that until faith comes we are “locked up” or held in prison. This is a prison of doubt, a jail cell of unbelief where we cannot access any of the benefits of the gospel and so are left imprisoned to our addictions and distractions. Faith unlocks the prison door and we are set free when we come to believe the gospel.
Then we also learn that faith saves us (Ephesians 2:8), faith gives us access to God (Ephesians 3:12), faith protects us (Ephesians 6:16) and faith raises us up (Colossians 2:12).
We can understand then that faith is the essential ingredient that connects us to God and the gospel. In fact, the Bible says, “without faith, it is impossible to please God” (Hebrews 11:6), but it also says with faith we overcome every sin, every problem, every challenge that we face in this world: “faith overcomes the world” (1 John 5:4).
Personally speaking, faith opens up all the Bible, all of Jesus Christ and all of Heaven to me. Faith makes the stories of the Bible come alive and gives me one experience after another of meeting with Jesus. Faith provides the excitement that keeps me coming back to the Bible time and time again, and faith is what fills my heart with love.
Question 3. Do you have faith in Jesus Christ? If so, please explain what that faith does for you.
