Lesson 18 There’s Life in Just One Look at Jesus

Question 4

God provided a very strange solution, didn’t He? Moses was told to make a snake and put it up on a pole so that the people could look at it and be healed. By human standards this solution would be ridiculous.
But have you noticed that many of God’s actions don’t seem to make sense to our way of thinking? For instance, striking a rock to quench thirst? Lifting up a snake on a pole to provide healing and life? Or for that matter, hanging a man on a cross to give us eternal life?
These things might not make sense, but there is a reason why God does them. Notice this passage:
1 Corinthians 1:18-20 NLT  The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God.  (19)  As the Scriptures say, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and discard the intelligence of the intelligent.”  (20)  So where does this leave the philosophers, the scholars, and the world’s brilliant debaters? God has made the wisdom of this world look foolish.
Putting Jesus up on a cross, using the shedding of His blood to cover over our sins and bring forgiveness, and having Him die to pay for the wrongs we’ve done seems strange, and probably even seems foolish to some. But God does this on purpose to show that human wisdom does not save us. In other words, it’s not just smart people who are saved, it’s all people who believe the message of the cross.

Question 4. According to Numbers 21:9, what happened when anyone looked at the uplifted snake on a pole?
