Lesson 21 Rescued to Become Adopted Into God’s Family

Questions 1 and 2

Dear friend, it’s so good to see you back for our next study.
We’ve been looking at Jesus’ rescue of us from Colossians 1:11-14. Jesus, the Light of the world, entered the darkness on the cross for the purpose of rescuing us out of the darkness.

Today we want to see two short illustrations of this rescue. As you know, everything that is taught plainly in the New Testament is illustrated by a story or stories in the Old Testament. So as you read the following stories, keep in mind that they are illustrating this truth: “For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins” (Colossians 1:13-14).
Let’s begin with the account of Abram (later God changed his name to Abraham) and his rescue of Lot:
Genesis 14:11-16 NLT  The victorious invaders then plundered Sodom and Gomorrah and headed for home, taking with them all the spoils of war and the food supplies.  (12)  They also captured Lot—Abram’s nephew who lived in Sodom—and carried off everything he owned.  (13)  But one of Lot’s men escaped and reported everything to Abram the Hebrew, who was living near the oak grove belonging to Mamre the Amorite. Mamre and his relatives, Eshcol and Aner, were Abram’s allies.  (14)  When Abram heard that his nephew Lot had been captured, he mobilized the 318 trained men who had been born into his household. Then he pursued Kedorlaomer’s army until he caught up with them at Dan.  (15)  There he divided his men and attacked during the night. Kedorlaomer’s army fled, but Abram chased them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.  (16)  Abram recovered all the goods that had been taken, and he brought back his nephew Lot with his possessions and all the women and other captives.

Question 2. Thinking about the above story in Genesis 14:11-16, what similarities can you find between Abram’s rescue of his nephew, Lot, and Jesus’ rescue of us? List as many as you can find:
