I hope you're enjoying these exercises of answering sample students.
Today let's talk about how our hearts first change, and then our lives. This is inside out changing, not mere external behavior change.
The world’s approach to change is directly tied to behavior. They have psychological teaching, self-help advice, recovery groups, 12-step groups and live-in programs, all designed to change the behavior of the one whom they have labeled as an "addict".
Similarly, the religious approach is directly tied to behavior. It uses the law, biblical principles and imperatives, threatenings of hell, etc. all designed to change the behavior of the one involved.
Both these approaches focus on attaining self-transformation through our own efforts.
But God’s way is to reach the heart, to change the very desires and motives and passions; and here is the reason why:
Proverbs 4:23 NLT Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. Jeremiah 17:9 (NIV) The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? Mark 7:21-23 NLT For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, (22) adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. (23) All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you.” Question 1. According to Proverbs 4:23 NLT and Mark 7:21-23 NLT, why is the heart so important?
