Lesson 11: Demoralized or Delighted
Questions 7 and 8
As you begin to mentor, many students will be inconsistent in their lessons, dismissive of the course teachings, making excuses for why your gospel application won’t work for them, and apathetic in their responses to you, which can be frustrating and disappointing. In essence, there will be daily reports to you from students filled with unbelief, apathy, and indifference, and this can be demoralizing. To be demoralized is to be made less hopeful and enthusiastic, to be discouraged by the magnitude of the problem, to be disheartened and overwhelmed.
Over the years, many mentors have started in this ministry rejoicing in their gospel freedom, excited and glad to help, only to be overcome by discouragement a few weeks or months later. The pattern has become familiar: first, the mentors stopped responding to the "Weekly Encouragement" teachings sent out by the Board of Directors because their hearts were no longer engaged, then they stopped responding to students, and eventually, they would give up and leave.
Third: Hebrews 12:1-3 (Amplified Bible - AMP) Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses [who by faith have testified to the truth of God's absolute faithfulness], stripping off every unnecessary weight and the sin which so easily and cleverly entangles us, let us run with endurance and active persistence the race that is set before us, 2 [looking away from all that will distract us and] focusing our eyes on Jesus, who is the Author and Perfecter of faith [the first incentive for our belief and the One who brings our faith to maturity], who for the joy [of accomplishing the goal] set before Him endured the cross, disregarding the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God [revealing His deity, His authority, and the completion of His work]. 3 Just consider and meditate on Him who endured from sinners such bitter hostility against Himself [consider it all in comparison with your trials], so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
Question 8. What is the reason we are to focus there as given in Hebrew 12:3?
