Lesson 26: Warring Against Our Flesh - God’s Provision in Marriage
Questions 1 and 2
Greetings and welcome back!
A Pattern of the One to Come
For today's lesson, we are going to go all the way back to the Garden of Eden when God gave Adam the task of naming the animals. Adam saw the male and female animals, each one with its pair, and this showed Adam his own need:
But for Adam no suitable helper was found.
Genesis 2:20 (NIV)
Now that God had shown Adam his need, God had a unique approach to creating Eve, remember that? God put Adam into a deep sleep and opened Adam's side so that Adam might have his bride.
As in all things, God was intentional in His creation of Eve in this fashion. He did it because the first Adam is a picture of the last Adam, Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:45 NIV). Jesus received His bride in a similar way: God put Him into a deep sleep, the sleep of death, Jesus had His side opened by a Roman soldier and out poured forgiving blood and cleansing water, both of which make a believer into the bride of Christ. And so we see that Adam, in many ways, was “a pattern of the one to come” (Romans 5:14), Jesus Christ.
"For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church.
Ephesians 5:31-32 (NIV)
Question 1. When Paul writes in Ephesians 5:31-32 about man and wife being united together, becoming one flesh, who is he really talking about?
God's Provision for Intimacy
Oh, how thankful we should be that Jesus Christ, the last Adam, was put on a cross and died; for in so doing, He has drawn His bride to Himself, and we will now live in intimacy with Him for eternity! Jesus died to get His bride!
Today, we will talk about the provision God has made for strong desires for intimacy, and we will see that this has been illustrated for us in both Adam needing His bride and Jesus dying for His.
Now for the matters you wrote about: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” But since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband.
1 Corinthians 7:1-2 (NIV)
