Lesson 26: Warring Against Our Flesh - God’s Provision in Marriage

Question 7

If you’re single and “burning” with desire, understand that God gave you this "burning desire" to motivate you to find a spouse. Earnestly seek the Lord, crying out to Him in prayer, and get in the process of looking for a spouse.

Objecting to God's Provision

In closing, let’s look at some arguments that have been made against this biblical truth.
  • Some say, "I am too sexually broken. I don't think it is right to bring another person into my mess." This is faulty reasoning. 1 Corinthians 7:1-9 clearly teaches us that God’s provision for those struggling with sexual immorality is marriage.
  • Others say, “I was born this way; I am not attracted to ______." Yes, we are all born in sin, but the good news is that we can be born again (1 Peter 1:3-5) and receive God’s nature, God’s desires, and God’s power to live and think as new people (1 Corinthians 6:9-11).
  • Still, others might say, “I don't desire marriage. I'm not good at it. It doesn't come naturally to me." Marriage is challenging for everyone. We all have flesh that is weak, selfish, and demanding, but the Christian life is not a natural life, it is a supernatural life, walking by the power of God’s Spirit:
So again I ask, does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you by the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard?
Galatians 3:5
Christ died to receive His bride, and we too must die to our own reasoning and excuses; and in dying, receive the spouse God has for us and learn to live in love with the spouse that God has provided.
If you are married, this is a good time, if you haven’t already, to discuss these things with your spouse. Please see this post for additional help in this area.

Lesson Summary

Summary: A matter is established by two or three witnesses (2 Corinthians 13:1). God has established this truth in the beginning with His creation of Adam and Eve, again with Christ and His bride; and finally, through the teaching of 1 Corinthians 7:1-9. All of which show God’s provision in marriage. Marriage is part of God’s design to help us win the war against our flesh and the devil.
