For the remainder of this lesson, let’s consider the work of God in the heart and life of King David again. You remember that David was given over to sexual sin for a time in his life, we studied this in Purity Bootcamp.
David committed adultery, and here is a summarized version of this time of sin in his life: he saw a naked woman bathing, desired her, had her brought to himself, slept with her, discovered she became pregnant, eventually had her husband killed and finally married the widow to hide the crime. David arrogantly thought that because he married the one with whom he committed adultery that all was well, but the Bible states, “But the thing David had done displeased the Lord” (2 Samuel 11:27 NIV).
God, Who “sees what is done in secret” (Matthew 6:4), was unhappy with David’s sin. To enlighten David, God sent His prophet Nathan, and through a very pointed illustration, Nathan was used by God to bring conviction to David’s heart.
David began to cry out to the Lord for grace and real change.
The entirety of Psalm 51 is dedicated to this tear-washed cry of David for heart change, showing David in a condition of brokenness. Let’s spend a few minutes in reading through a few verses of this Psalm, hearing David’s heart, reflecting on his cry for help, then let's pray God's Word back to Him as we began to do in Purity Bootcamp.
I find it helpful to personalize the Psalm and pray it myself. Please read Psalm 51:1-2, and then here is how I would pray that passage to God:
“Oh God, please have mercy on me a sinner. I’ve lived in the lust of my flesh, seeking to gratify my flesh rather than crucify it. But now I see Jesus, out of His great love for me, hanging on the cross to pay for my sins. According to your great love, please forgive me. Show me that my sins were blotted out at the cross and that Your blood washed them all away.”
Question 2. Here is a place for you to write out a personalized version of Psalm 51:1-2 yourself:
