Lesson 6 Washing at the Cross Frees Us for Fellowship

Questions 1 and 2

Today we want to ask the question, “why?” Why did Jesus die to make us free? Why should we wash at the cross daily and fight against impurity?
Going back to the beginning, Genesis 3:8 tells us that God used to spend time with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden:
Gen 3:8 NIV Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day.
Adam and Eve recognized that it was the Lord walking toward them in the garden because this was no doubt His usual pattern. It was their ordinary course of action every day to meet up with the Lord God and enjoy a wonderful relationship as they walked and talked together.
And so it is clear that one of the purposes God created humanity was to have an excellent relationship with God, to fellowship with the Trinity. To talk to Him, listen to Him, share the love.
But then something came between God and his people—sin. Adam and Eve sinned, and the fellowship they once enjoyed with the Lord God was no longer sweet. Sin blocked the enjoyment of their relationship.

Question 1. How has the enjoyment of your relationship with God, and others, been affected by your sin?

God had told Adam and Eve they could eat of any tree in the Garden of Eden except one, the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. One day Eve began to have a discussion with the devil who was in the form of a serpent, who told Eve all the beautiful points about eating fruit from that tree. Here was the result:
Genesis 3:6 ESV So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.

Question 2. What things did Eve see in the tree that caused her to want to eat the fruit of it?
