Lesson 25 Washing at the Cross: Drawn out of Sin
Questions 1 and 2
Today, we want to consider the truth that as we are drawn to Jesus, we are drawn out of sin. This is so much different than “white-knuckling” or merely “abstaining,” and “counting days free” while everything within us wants to sin.
The practical difference for me was like this: when I tried just stopping the sexually impure behavior, my mind was filled with pornographic images and my flesh cried out to be gratified. My thoughts of sexual scenarios weakened my resolve to stop the behavior. Of course, with this thinking my “turning over a new leaf” didn’t last long, and I would once again sink into the deep waters of impurity.
But then my understanding and the application of the gospel in my life began to change, and so did I. Each experience with the cross pulled me closer to Jesus and farther from impurity. The impure images in my mind, once 3D and in full color, began fading away in the light of Jesus’ love that I was experiencing at the cross.
Question 1. What is the difference between being drawn up and out of sin to Jesus, versus trying to claw your way out yourself?

Let’s look now at our passage for today:
“Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die. John 12:31-33
In this passage Jesus tells us that the time had come for the following three things to happen: the world would be judged, the prince of this world would be driven out, and all people would be drawn to Jesus.
Question 2. The Jewish method of execution was death by stoning, yet Jesus said He would be “lifted up.” What was He referring to here?
