Lesson 28 Walking by the Spirit: Spiritual Transformation

Questions 4 and 5

Yes, through faith in Jesus, and the demonstration of that faith through repentance and baptism, the people would receive forgiveness of their sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Now comes some good news for us; in his declaration, Peter moves from that group of people at Pentecost to you and I, when he says:
Acts 2:39 ESV For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.

Question 4. According to Acts 2:39, who is promised forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit?

Peter’s words, “all who are far off” meant the Gentiles, you and I! We were not part of God’s covenant people, we were enemies of God, far from God, those lost in sin and previously excluded. Now the gospel would be preached to us so that through faith in Christ we would receive forgiveness of sins, be included in God’s family and qualified to share in the inheritance (Colossians 1:12), and receive the gift of God’s Spirit.
What amazing grace God gives to His enemies, through the gospel, that we would be called His friends and be included in His family and receive His Holy Spirit.
But the work of God’s Spirit is not limited to the work of salvation; now let’s remind ourselves of the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in the life of believers:
John 16:7 ESV Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
John 16:13-15 ESV When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. (14) He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. (15) All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

Question 5. According to the above passages, what title does Jesus give to His Spirit, and what would the Spirit do for us?
