Lesson 28 Walking by the Spirit: Spiritual Transformation
Question 6
Yes, God the Holy Spirit is our Helper! He helps us in our weakness (Romans 8:26), He helps us when we don’t know what to pray (Romans 8:26), He helps us when tempted (Hebrews 2:18), He helps us put to death that which belongs to our earthly nature (Romans 8:13), He helps us run our race with perseverance, and He helps us up when we fall.
He is our Guide (John 16:13). He guides us into all truth; that is, He leads us to the Person Who is the embodiment of all truth—to Jesus Who is the Way, the Truth and the Life (John 14:6). He leads us to the cross and invites us to kneel down and look up and see all that Jesus has done for us there, and as we look at Jesus, the Spirit begins to transform us into the image of Jesus.
You know, people can read the Bible and even learn the details of the gospel apart from the Spirit’s work. And while they might gain knowledge, they cannot experience transformation if the Holy Spirit is not at work in their lives. Information is not transformation.
When the Holy Spirit is at work, He makes the gospel personal to us, as if He is writing Jesus on our hearts.
He enables us to say like Paul, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Himself for me” (Galatians 2:20 NIV). Notice the personalization and the transformation. This is the work of God’s Spirit!
The Spirit of God both gives us faith to believe and comes to live in us when we do (Ephesians 1:13, Galatians 3:2). He lives in us and helps us to walk by His power and leads us away from a life of gratifying our flesh (Galatians 5:16, 25). He does this by pointing us to Jesus, taking us to the cross, helping us to die to our sin and to live for Jesus.
