Today, we want to focus on the Holy Spirit’s role in our freedom from sexual impurity.
God’s Spirit works in our hearts and lives, setting us free from the law of sin and death (Romans 8:2) “…and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom” (2 Corinthians 3:17).
There is such a fantastic illustration of the work of the Spirit in the very first chapter of the Bible. If you study the passage you will see that the earth was originally:
in darkness (Genesis 1:2)
empty (Genesis 1:2)
buried in the water (the “deep,” the “chaotic abyss” of water--Genesis 1:2).
Then the Spirit of God hovered over the waters, and God spoke life and light into existence. The Word and the Spirit worked together to bring about life.
“Genesis 1:2-3 NIV Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. (3) And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.”
That which, before the Spirit, was in darkness and buried in the deep chaotic abyss was transformed into light and life-giving water and a fruit-producing earth. This is precisely what happens to every believer; this transformation is the work of the Spirit.
2 Corinthians 3:16-18 ESV "But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. (17) Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. (18) And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit."
2 Corinthians 4:3-6 ESV "And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. (4) In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. (5) For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. (6) For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ."
Question 1. How does this illustration in Genesis 1 apply to our life in sin and the subsequent power of the Word and the Spirit in our lives? See 2 Corinthians 4:3-6.
