Lesson 35 Washing at the Cross: Buried and Risen
Questions 3, 4 and 5
Colossians 2:12 ESV having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead.
Question 3. According to Colossians 2:12, how are we connected with Jesus in His burial?
Yes, we were “buried with Him in baptism.” You, by faith, died with Christ on the cross, were buried with Him in the tomb, and then rose with Him to new life. Baptism shows your connection with Christ; that you died with Him and rose to new life.
The Spirit joins us with Jesus, unites us with Him, baptizing us into Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection, the moment we place faith in the cross of Christ. We evidence our faith by our works when we are physically baptized.
We were raised with him. When Jesus was raised from the dead, He left His grave clothes, and your sins, behind in the tomb. In other words, your sins not only died on a cross but were buried in a tomb never to be seen again (Hebrews 8:12, Hebrews 10:17, Micah 7:19).
This is important. You, friend, have risen with Christ, a “new person” with a new nature. You have left your sins in the tomb. That “old person” who loved to sin, who loved pornography and sexual impurity was left behind in Joseph’s tomb. You have now risen with Christ to a new life. This is how our hearts begin to be captured at the cross/resurrection of Jesus, because the good news tells us that not only were our sins destroyed but also that we became new. You now have a new identity and a new life.
Question 5. What practical application do you see from the teaching that your “old person” was buried with Jesus and left behind and that God raised you to new life?
