Lesson 37 Washing At The Cross: From Death to Life

Questions 6 and 7

Yes, all the passages speak of the forgiveness of your sins, and this forgiveness sets you free!
But we might ask here, how did God accomplish our forgiveness at the cross? And the answer is in the next phrase of our passage:
Colossians 2:13-14 ESV And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, (14) by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.

Question 6. According to Colossians 2:14, how were we “forgiven all our trespasses”?

With each passing year that I entangled myself in pornography, I was adding to my debt. Each time I gratified the lusts of my flesh, gave in to the yearnings and cravings of my sinful nature, I was stacking my pile of sin debt higher. Can you identify with this ever-increasing debt, too?
If so, then read this carefully. God “canceled your record of debt.” He “set it aside” and “nailed it to the cross!” Listen to the pounding of the nails into the flesh of Jesus, do you hear it? God is nailing your record of wrongs to a tree! He is canceling your debt!

Question 7. How does it feel to know that your record of wrongs has been canceled and nailed to the cross?

If you think about it, this record of debt, like the law itself, had “legal demands” upon you, requiring your payment of death for sin. Yet in Jesus’ death, those legal requirements were all met for you by Jesus. This is how God has completely forgiven you!
Listen to each pounding of the nail...
Pornography: forgiven! Adultery: forgiven! Self-gratification: forgiven! Lies to cover up lust: forgiven! Living in darkness: forgiven! Greed, murder, breaking the Sabbath, rebellion of all kinds, unbelief, blasphemy: all forgiven!
Dear friend, this is how God raises us from the dead and gives us new life; through the canceling of our sin debt, thereby restoring our relationship to God and re-connecting us to the Head!
