Lesson 5 Reasons for Sin’s Slavery: That We Might Learn to War Against our Flesh

Questions 6 and 7

I see three important things that Ephesians 6:10-13 teaches us:
Ephesians 6:10-13 shows us that we are at war! The devil has “schemes” that he uses against us. We’ve been victims of his many schemes in the past, but now we are taught to put on armor to protect ourselves against him, and to take up a battle stance to survive. This "armor" is Christ Himself; He is the sum of it as well as the individual pieces of it.
Ephesians 6:10-13 shows us that we are to wrestle! We are not wrestling against humans, but we are to wrestle against the spiritual forces of darkness! We are not to be passive and merely let the devil and his demons destroy us. Wrestle! Fight, soldier, fight!
Ephesians 6:10-13 shows us that we are to withstand the attacks! We are told to stand firm against them, don’t give in to them but stand firm, dig in, stand your ground!
How do we do all this? My friend, you are never so clothed in armor, so strong in fighting, as when you are kneeling at the foot of the cross. For there you are being loved, and built up and given a new heart and made willing to fight for One who died for you!
We get the desire to crucify our flesh (Galatians 5:24) right at the cross. As we see Jesus obeying His Father clear unto death, as we understand that our sin nailed Him to the cross, as we see that His love kept Him there, we receive Holy Spirit power to crucify our sin that crucified God’s Son.
This means that the cross gives us the energy to be on a “seek and destroy” mission. It teaches us to seek out where our evil desires live and kill them. We crucify our flesh with its passions and desires, and we do this by kneeling at the foot of the cross, seeing Jesus crucified in our place because of our sin.
