Welcome back to the course, we’re glad you are here. Today is the second part of our study in our new identity, taken from Romans chapter 6.
As a reminder, in the previous lesson, we saw that we were united with Jesus in His death so that our old nature, the “body of sin,” might be destroyed, and that being dead to sin we might become free from it. We no longer identify with our sin but with our Savior.
Now the Apostle Paul begins to apply this gospel truth to our hearts and lives, telling us precisely what we are to do with it.
Romans 6:11-14 ESV So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. (12) Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. (13) Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. (14) For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.
Question 1. According to Romans 6:11, how are you specifically told to apply the gospel to your life?
Here we are told to consider ourselves dead to sin and alive to God. This means we are to believe it to be true, to reckon it as fact.
In other words, you are to believe that your old self who loved to sin was crucified and buried; that you died with Christ. You are to consider it a fact that when Jesus rose from the dead on the third day, you rose to new life. You are, therefore, dead to sin and alive to God. You have a new identity.
Take just a moment and turn to the cross just now, but this time see yourself there. See your old self that lusted and lied, that was impure and defiled. See him/her nailed to the tree, hanging under the wrath of God. Hear yourself crying out "Into Your hands I commit my Spirit," then see yourself bow your head and breathe your last. Your old self, your old nature was crucified with Christ!
At the same time we are considering ourselves dead to sin we want to remember that we are alive to God. In Christ you have been raised to a new life and have exited the tomb of sin. You now live a resurrected life that has come out of the grave of impurity, that now has power over darkness, and that purposefully walks very closely with Jesus, “the Resurrection and the Life.” We believe ourselves alive to God.
Dead to sin, alive to God! It’s our new identity!
