I accidentally discovered immoral images online around the age of ten, but it wasn't until the age of eleven that a friend would show me how to masturbate. For years following, I would be engulfed in impurity. I became more and more depraved and only descended deeper into darkness over time. In high school, a classmate of mine invited me to church, and soon after, I began studying the Bible. At the age of 17, I committed my life to Jesus. While I had made progress in the area of purity, sexual sin still had a hold on me. I was in a cycle of wanting to quit, resisting, falling, and resolving never to do it again.
This cycle continued a couple of years until one night when my campus ministry group did a devotional on sin. That night I went home and fell to sexual immorality. Convicted by my sin and in despair, I called my campus minister, and we had a conversation that led to change. I became free from impurity and lust for four years. However, at the age of 23, which was a rough year for me spiritually, I fell back into impurity.
I lived out Luke 11:24-26, which says, "When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, 'I will return to the house I left.' When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first."
My life of impurity became far worse at this point than it ever was prior. I went to deeper extremes to get the gratification I desired from impurity. I was full of shame and guilt in my life at this point. Once again, the cycle of seeking freedom, resisting, and then falling to temptation would continue for years. Sometimes I would experience short-term victory, but I would always end up right back at the same spot in my sin.
Fast forward five years to just a couple of months ago when I discovered the Setting Captives Free course through the recommendation of a friend. I have learned through this course that to experience true freedom from impurity, Jesus must be at the absolute center. I realized that this is what I have been missing all these years. I've always tried to overcome by my own will, being more spiritual or just trying harder. I have learned from Setting Captives Free that relying on the power of the cross and fixing my eyes on Jesus, being renewed by His sacrifice daily, is the key to overcoming.
I have experienced the peace and joy that comes from freedom for several months now. I am not perfect, I still wrestle and stumble at times, but what I have learned from Setting Captives Free is to focus on the cross. This has helped me to fall in love with Jesus like never before and has propelled me toward freedom.
