Lesson 31 Washing at the Cross, Jesus is Your Advocate

Question 7

We must be careful here that we don’t use the amazing grace God gives us as a license to sin. It would be just like the devil to get us to think: “Oh, ok, so when I sin Jesus advocates for me, and I receive fresh grace. Then I can go sin knowing that my sins are covered in Jesus’ blood, and God sees me through Christ, as though I’m still righteous.” In Romans 6:1-2 ESV, this thinking is debunked, “What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? (2) By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?”
When you sin, let the kindness of God and the grace of God lead you to repentance (Romans 2:4), and get back up again. “For the righteous falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble in times of calamity” (Proverbs 24:16 ESV).
Both believers and unbelievers fall and fail, but believers rise again. Remember, the sanctification that God provides to all believers is a lifetime of change.
Even as God led the Israelites into the promised land in stages (Numbers 33:1-2), so we grow into Christ-likeness by degrees (2 Corinthians 3:18), sometimes swiftly and sometimes slowly. All the while, He gives more grace to us when we are weak, picks us up when we fall, helps us to be more dependent on Him, and slowly changes us into His image.
Summary: you have an Advocate with the Father when you sin (1 John 2:1). He removed God’s wrath from you when He died on the cross, and now He is your Advocate, Your Intercessor, the One who covers your sin with His blood. He protects you in this way because He loves you. Let His love sink down deep into your heart, for it will change you to the core of your being.

Matthew writes, "That Jesus not only died for me and took on my sin, but he is also my intercessor, my defender and my advocate when I do sin. God demands justice, which he absolutely should, but Jesus stands in the gap of my sin when I do mess up and defends me from the wrath of God, which I deserve."
