Lesson 53 Warring Against the Flesh: Living in Resurrection Power

Questions 3 and 4

Yes, God has incomparably great power is for us who believe. We access God’s power by faith, by believing the gospel.
You need to believe that your sin was crucified and buried, and you are forgiven and accepted. You need to believe that at the cross, Jesus removed your sin “as far as the East is from the West” (Psalm 103:12), meaning you will never see it again. You need to believe that God does not look at your performance; instead, God looks to Jesus’ performance; to His perfect obedience and finished work on the cross, and He puts Jesus’ performance to your account!
Faith connects us to God’s power and brings the experience of Jesus’ resurrection to our hearts and lives. Faith raises us up, counteracting and overcoming the downward pull of sin.

Question 3. According to Ephesians 1:19-20NIV, to what is the power that works in believers compared? “That power is the same as the mighty strength (20) he exerted when he from the dead.”

All believers have the same power that raised Jesus from the dead working in us. If you would like to worship through a song telling us about “the same power” listen to this song.
This resurrection power working in us means we can stop viewing pornography and sever any impure relationships, never to live in adultery or immoral relationships again. We can overcome the evil desires of our flesh and walk free from our past. Resurrection power is an elevating power; it raises us up!
Remember, this is not our power; it is God’s power. We are weak in ourselves, the Bible compares us to “clay pots” (2 Corinthians 4:7) which is a weak and deteriorating container. But our weakness is fully overcome by God’s power: “...so that the all-surpassing power is shown to be from God, and not from us” (2 Corinthians 4:7). The word for “all-surpassing power” in the Greek is “hyperbole,” meaning God’s power is over the top, it’s more than enough, more than sufficient for every problem, every temptation, every fall, every struggle in life. We are weak; He is strong.
Because of our weaknesses, we should put “no confidence in our flesh” (Philippians 3:3). We should never think, “I got this, I’m able to overcome Satan no problem, I can watch that movie and not be defiled, I can see that old girlfriend or boyfriend alone and be just fine.” No, this is all putting confidence in the flesh, not acknowledging our inherent weakness.
Jesus’ resurrection power turns our weaknesses into strength (Hebrews 11:32-34), makes us more than conquerors (Romans 8:37) and leads us in triumphal procession wherever we go (2 Corinthians 2:14). God’s kingdom is all about resurrection power! “The Kingdom of God is not just talking; it is living by God’s power” (1 Corinthians 4:20 TLB).
Let’s see how Jesus’ resurrection power raises us up, sets us free, and keeps us living free:
1 Peter 1:3-5 NIV Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, (4) and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, (5) who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
