Lesson 4 Purposes for Slavery to Sin: That We Might Recognize Our Need to Wash at the Cross and Walk by the Spirit
Question 6
We always need to see the gospel in all passages of Scripture, and it is easy to do when we consider the bigger story—the primary story of the Bible. Two thousand years ago God looked down from heaven on a world enslaved to sin. So much sickness and pain. So many people beat up, plundered and molested by sin. So many people dead and dying. He saw you, right where you are, in the pain that you now have due to sin.
And He had compassion for the world He had made. He felt our misery; He hurt with us. So Jesus, like the Samaritan in the story, was moved with compassion and came where we were. He took our sin off of us and put it on Himself, carrying our burden for us.
Look at the cross just now: there you see Jesus paying for your sin and purchasing your rest. You see the Roman soldiers beating Him and striping His back, plucking out His beard, and piercing His hands and feet. He went through this for you, friend! He was striped that you might be healed (Isaiah 53:5), He carried your sin burden so that you might rest!
You see, if we have been unable to fight off sin’s temptations and attacks, if we’ve been rendered powerless by sin, if we’ve been broken and humbled, then what we need is to Wash at the cross and rest at the cross! Our slavery to sin shows us our need of the gospel, just as the bruised and broken man needed the Good Samaritan.
Question 6. It has only been a few lessons, but are you beginning to see there is hope in winning this battle over these sins that have you in bondage? Does coming to the Cross make sense? Share with your mentor your struggles, questions, and hope you are having as you go through these lessons. Your mentor is praying and wants to explain how God’s Word has made the way clear for victory over sin by the Cross.
