Lesson 18 Warring Against Our Flesh: Praying God’s Word

Question 5

After having written out the above verses, and having prayed through the entire passage, I might summarize my study and prayer time like this:
Father in Heaven, this has been a magnificent study in your word today. I have been reminded that my sin was covered over by the blood of Jesus, and that I am forgiven. I have been reminded that I am righteous, not through my own efforts and works, but through Christ’s blood and righteousness. I see this very truth was taught and illustrated by both Abraham and David. You declared Abraham righteous when He believed Your Word concerning his descendent (Jesus) blessing all nations on earth. Therefore you declare me righteous when I believe your word about Jesus, that He took my curse on the cross and purchased my eternal blessing. And You declared David to be forgiven apart from his works or law-keeping, and by simple faith he enjoyed the knowledge that his sin was covered. And you are telling me that is my condition as well, my sin is covered and I am now a blessed man like David. Oh, Lord, my faith has been renewed today and my heart has been encouraged, for I have seen once again that it is not what I do that makes me righteous but rather it is what Jesus did. Now, oh Lord, help me to treasure this truth in my heart today, cause me to burn with passion over the sight of Jesus dying with my sins on Him, under your curse and wrath, that I might be forgiven and declared righteous apart from works or law keeping. Oh, Lord, please help me to share this truth with my wife today, and with anyone else you might bring along my path. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Friend, it requires faith in God’s Word to be free from habitual sin. It requires looking at the cross with eyes of faith, seeing Jesus suffering and dying for you, and rising from the dead to justify you before God. It takes hearing and believing this message, over and over, and as we do God breaks our chains and sets us free!
If you haven’t already, make writing out God’s Word and praying it back to Him a regular part of your day, and pretty soon you will find that you are loving this way of incorporating study, meditation, and prayer all in one activity! And in being captivated by God’s Word, you are set free from habitual sin!
