Lesson 7 Washing at the Cross Produces Humility and Sets us Free
Questions 8 and 9
The word “therefore” in Philippians 2:9 reminds us of what was previously said, that Jesus humbled Himself clear unto death. Therefore, because Jesus humbled Himself into the grave, He was raised to the highest heaven, ascending with the keys of death and hell in His hand, was given the Name above every Name and will receive the worship and adoration of every human being who ever lived.
And Jesus is our Example. We are told to:
“In humility value others above yourselves” (verse 3).
“Each of you look to the interest of others” (verse 4).
“Have the same mindset as Christ Jesus” (verse 5).
In other words, we are called to live a life of humility, looking for ways to serve others and put their interests ahead of our own. This is the opposite of looking to our own interests, gratifying our flesh and having others serve us.
1 Peter 5:5-6 tells us to clothe ourselves with humility, and this instruction comes with a promise: “that He may lift you up in due time.” Just as Jesus was raised on the third day and exalted to the highest place, so He will lift you up in His time.
My friend, this humbling comes to us as we look long and often at the cross. Pornography and impurity put a brick wall around our hearts, the cross crushes that brick wall to pieces and infiltrates us with God's love. So look at the cross, see Jesus and His love coming down from heaven to rescue you and take you back to heaven with Him. Wash at the cross, and live in the humility that comes from knowing you are greatly and deeply loved.
Question 9. Are you seeing and believing the cross as the means of changing your heart? Are you beginning to have hope that you can be free from the power and control of sin? Please share your thoughts with your mentor, and they will pray for you and encourage you with their own story from God’s Word.
