Lesson 1: Victory and Rest

Question 2

Perhaps you know that the book of Joshua is about God leading the people of Israel into the promised land, giving them victory through Joshua over every enemy, and in so doing giving them rest in the promised land. But did you know that this is a picture of the work of Jesus Christ, our Joshua?
1 Corinthians 15:57 says, “But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” And Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28 NCV).
So when we’re studying the Book of Joshua and reading the actual accounts of the Israelites, what we’re really studying is the work of Jesus Christ in our own lives, and how He brings us to victory and rest, even as God used Joshua to bring victory and rest to the Israelites.
What you will see in these lessons is numerous word pictures of the gospel of Jesus Christ; these are illustrations of Jesus’ love that He showed when He went to the cross and then three days later rose from the dead.
These lessons are written to build your faith. As you study and believe these gospel truths, your faith will increase. You will see the cross in living color and experience the power of the resurrection, as we study the book of Joshua. “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ” (Romans 10:17).
So let’s begin by reading the following passage and answering the questions below:
Joshua 1:1-2 (NCV) After Moses, the servant of the LORD, died, the LORD spoke to Joshua son of Nun, Moses' assistant. 2 The LORD said, "My servant Moses is dead. Now you and all these people go across the Jordan River into the land I am giving to the Israelites.
