Lesson 1: Victory and Rest

Questions 4 and 5

Yes, Jesus saves!
In Joshua 1:6, we read that God spoke to Joshua and said, "Joshua, be strong and brave! You must lead these people so they can take the land that I promised their fathers I would give them.” Joshua was to be like a captain for all the Israelites, leading them through all the challenges and difficulties of a hostile world, leading them to victory over all enemies, leading them to finally experience rest. "Remember what Moses, the servant of the LORD, told you. He said the LORD your God would give you rest and would give you this land” (Joshua 1:13).
In a similar way, Jesus, the “Captain of our salvation” (Hebrews 2:10) leads us through all the challenges we face in life and through all the difficulties of living in this hostile world, He leads us to victory over all enemies we encounter: the world, the flesh and the devil, and He takes us safely to heaven where we will rest throughout all eternity.
An airline pilot's role is to take people from point A to point B safely in an airplane. At times, they must navigate around thunderstorms, handle abnormal and even emergency situations that might arise, and generally guide the aircraft in such a way that all passengers arrive to their destination safely.
What would you think if the next time you went to fly somewhere the airline said, “Today you will be expected to fly the plane yourself, as we ran out of captains”? Surely, even if you were a private pilot, you would know better than to attempt this (even as the airline knows better than to say it). No, you want a well-trained and highly experienced captain in control of the airplane because you want to get to your destination safely.
Friend, apart from Jesus Christ, your life will fly into the “thunderstorm” of sin, or experience some other kind of "crash." “The wages of sin is death” (Romans 3:23). You and I desperately need the Lord Jesus who came to save us from all enemies and lead us safely through all the traps of this sin-filled world, and take us safely to heaven. This is the exact thing we see illustrated in the Book of Joshua.
Today was merely an introduction to the Book of Joshua. Just wait until you see all the pictures of Jesus Christ in this book. They are all designed as studies to build our faith!

Kelly writes, "When I read Joshua 1:6, the first thing that came  to my thoughts was the Lord Jesus in the Garden of Gethsamene. Sure enough through out Jesus earthly ministry He was constantly battling against the enemy, against those who opposed Him and hated Him. But here in the Garden was the beginning of His greatest battle of all as all the fury of Hell was going to be unleashed on Him along with the crushing devastating weight of the Fathers wrath for our sins. I can see God saying to Him as He cried to the Father for this cup to be removed from Him; “ Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them.“--Joshua 1:6 Except its more than a land that we inherit, we inherent freedom, forgiveness, redemption and reconciliation. We inherit God. "Now if we are children, then we are heirs--heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ . . ." (Romans 8:17). In this faith building course I want my faith to be built up as the Holy Spirit open my eyes to see that all of scripture is talking about Jesus!"
