Lesson 15: The Cross and our Inheritance

Questions 1 and 2

Please read Joshua 13, Philippians 3:12 and 1 Peter 1:3-4 in preparation for today’s lesson.
There are two main parts to the book of Joshua: chapters 1–12 which describe the conquest of Canaan, and chapters 13–24 which describe the division of the land. We are at the beginning of chapter 13, exactly halfway through the book and at the start of the second section.
When reading this section (Joshua chapters 13-24), we might be tempted to lose interest thinking the text not relevant and merely historical, but this would be a mistake. What we are reading is God’s Word, His instruction for the people of Israel but also His communication to us today.
To illustrate this point, notice what Jesus said to the Sadducees, when they attempted to entrap him with a ridiculous question:
Matthew 22:31-32 (ESV) And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God: 32 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living.”

Question 1. In the passage above, Jesus quotes from Exodus 3:6. Who does Jesus say that God was speaking to?

In His response to the Saducees, Jesus quotes from Exodus 3:6 which was God speaking to Moses. But the careful reader will notice that when speaking with the Sadducees Jesus said that Exodus 3:6 “was said to you by God.” Exodus 3:6 was God speaking not only to Moses but also to the Sadducees thousands of years later. God’s Word speaks not only to whom the passage is originally addressed, but also to all people who have ears to hear.
Making this practical, Joshua 13-24 is God speaking TO YOU today. It would be a mistake to rush over it for this is God’s infallible Word, and we should give our full attention to it.

Question 2. Do you understand that when you read God’s Word (any part of it) God Himself is speaking to you? What thoughts do you have on this issue?

Kelly writes, "This is one of the most comforting,  exciting and drawing aspects of the Gods Word. Though God is invisible; in His word we have something tangible that we can hold onto. We have His Word and His Words are precious, and powerful because in them we have Him. I imagine one of the most precious and valuable things a widowed  wife can have is those  old love letters from her beloved deceased husband. He’s no longer present with her physically but when she read those letters from him I imagine she can almost  sense his presence there with her as his words excite past experiences and memories. How much more superior can our experience be with with Jesus presence through His  Word knowing that He is the Word. John 1:14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. When I lay on my bed at night cuddled up with the word of God it is as if I’m with my Husband and He is whispering in my ear the words of His love. As a single woman it is so important to my heart to have that. Isaiah 54:5 For your Maker is your husband-- the LORD Almighty is his name-"
