The Cross Gives Us Our Inheritance and Rest

Questions 1 and 2

Please read Joshua 14:1-5 for today’s lesson.
Joshua 14:1-2 (NCV) Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders of all the tribes of Israel decided what land to give to the people in the land of Canaan. The LORD had commanded Moses long ago how he wanted the people to choose their land. The people of the nine-and-a-half tribes threw lots to decide which land they would receive.
Today’s the day! The Israelites are now going to get their inheritance! After hundreds of years as slaves, 40 years of wandering in the wilderness, they now take possession of the Promised Land.

Question 1. Consider what the Israelites must have been thinking, how they might have felt when receiving their inheritance. What are your thoughts?

Consider that the Israelites had known nothing but slavery and wandering in a wilderness up to this point. Exhausted with their wanderings, and acknowledging they had no home, they must have felt like vagabonds, ex-slaves who didn’t have a penny to their name, those who had previously been more like property than people.
And now, look! Through the priest, Eliezer, and Joshua, they inherit the promised land! They get an inheritance of property and can build homes and live in community as God’s chosen family! They had gone from slaves and vagabonds to inheritors! God had given them victory over every enemy and rest from all their journeys and battles.
Victory and rest! What a precious inheritance that God gave to His children!

Question 2. Do you see how this applies to your own life today? Please share your thoughts:
