The Cross Gives Us Our Inheritance and Rest

Question 3

As you consider the joy the Israelites must have had, see your own story here. Formerly we were slaves to sin, wandering in the wilderness of sin, rebellious toward God and living for the lusts of our flesh. We had no victory over the lusts of our flesh and we had no eternal place of rest.
But now look! Jesus Christ died on the cross not only to free you from slavery but also to give you an inheritance.
Notice again this passage that I used at the beginning of this lesson:
Joshua 14:1 (NCV) Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders of all the tribes of Israel decided what land to give to the people in the land of Canaan.
Jesus Christ is both our Joshua and our Eliezer (the priest), and He gives us victory over every enemy and complete rest by faith in Him. Through faith in the gospel of Jesus Christ, we enter that rest. “Everyone who believes enters that rest” (Hebrews 4:3).
"As both Aaron and Melchizedek were needed to set forth the sacrificial and royal functions of Christ’s priesthood, so both Phinehas and Joshua were required (Josh. 14: 1) to exhibit Him as the Bestower of our inheritance—the Lamb-Lion of Revelation 5: 5, 6. As Priest (and Lamb) Christ purchased the "eternal inheritance" (Heb. 9: 11-15), as the antitypical Joshua (and Lion) His power conducts the heirs into it." From "Gleanings in Joshua (Arthur Pink Collection Book 28)" by Arthur W. Pink
Yes, it took two men, Joshua and Eliezer to picture the work of the Lord Jesus in giving us our inheritance. The main thing to see is that Jesus gives us this inheritance through His death.
Hebrews 9:16-17 (NIV-WS) In the case of a will, it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it, because a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living.
Jesus died to give you your inheritance. His death had to be confirmed, and so a Roman soldier stabbed his heart with a sword, which brought out blood and water. If Jesus were still alive it would only have brought out blood. He died, the Roman soldier proved His death and so His will has taken effect; this means you have your inheritance which includes victory and rest for you!

Question 3. Take a moment and come to Jesus at the cross. Do you see Him dying for the very purpose of giving you your eternal inheritance, which includes victory over every enemy and rest? What do you see as you gaze at the cross just now?
